Today I woke up early, at 7 AM, to get to the airport. At 8:30 Am one of my best friends, Jens, came to visit me for the last time and to wish me a good flight. Some minutes later, my mom arrived and my father, mother, brother, sister and me took the car to the airport. After a drive of about one hour, we arrived at Schiphol Amsterdam. Parking wasn’t easy, so I went ahead to find my fellow students. Which were already there with their family and friends.
After checking in and dropping off our luggage, we had our last goodbyes with our family and friends. And from this moment forward, we were with just the six of us on our way to Indonesia. I knew from stories that Schiphol Airport was big, but I never thought it was this big. We went straight to our gate, and waited there until we had to pass the security and get on our plane. We met a old pair, who went to Indonesia a lot of times on their holidays and they told us how beautiful Indonesia is and which cultural places we should visit when we have the chance.
After taking off with the plane, we were allowed to move freely through the plane. Monique had some presents and a postcard, which she was allowed to open in the plane. This was a emotional moment for her, as for Janna and me. She got a very beautiful book with wishes from all her friends and family. I was looking over her shoulder, and suddenly I felt a bit sad about leaving my family and friends behind in Holland. But after this harsh moment, we started to cheer each other up and started to make fun in the plane. Our stewardesses must have thought we were crazy, when we got out of the plane in Abu Dhabi. Singing “Stop, en door”. After out stop in Abu Dhabi, we went back in the plane and headed for Jakarta. I don’t know much about this part of our flight, because I slept almost the whole time. The plane wasn’t full, so we had two or three chairs for ourselves, which made sleeping a lot comfortable.
07-02-2014:
We arrived in Jakarta on Friday the 7th of February. But, almost an hour later than planned. After showing our passports and visa, we were allowed to go in to Indonesia. Then the running started, we had to catch our plane to Jogjakarta within 15 minutes, and we didn’t know the road. So every member off the staff of the Jakarta Airport we saw, we asked the way. Some even ran with us to show us the way. In the end, we had to wait for 15 minutes. Our plane was delayed. We went with the bus to our plane, and after a short flight of an hour we arrived at Jogjakarta Airport. It was raining very very hard.
We were picked up by Pita and Dede, our tutor and our teacher Bahasa Indonesia at Jogja Aiport. Dede told us that it is a good sign that it rains when you arrive in Indonesia. ‘The land welcomes you’, he said. Pita and Dede had arranged that two taxi’s came to pick us up, and brought us to our hotel. The UNY hotel. During the trip we already learned some Bahasa Indonesia, like ‘saya’ which means ‘I am’. At the UNY hotel we met Yusuf and Widi, they were also our tutors during this semester. After taking a shower and unpacking most of our stuff, Dede, Pita and Yusuf invited us for diner. The people are so nice and helpful in Indonesia, which is very nice but also a bit difficult. We want to do the same for them, but is that how things work here?
During the diner, we learned how to count to five in Bahasa Indonesia, how to say ‘you’re welcome’ and a lot more. The food tasted delicious, but it wasn’t the traditional Indonesian food. They told us that our stomach had to get used to the Indonesian food, so we won’t get sick. After diner, we went back to the hotel to recover from our flight and to, hopefully, avoid a jetlag.
