10-2-2014:

Our first day at university Negeri in Yogyakarta. Today the new semester started, which we are joining at the university. It’s common here to open a new semester with a ceremony. During the ceremony we saw a traditional Indonesian dance. It was slow, and the dancers wore traditional clothes. The dance was beautiful; I didn’t know where to look during it.
After the opening dance there where speeches from, for example, the vice dean. We had to speech also, so Janna and I stood before 50 people and spoke to them in English. I was very nervous, but we prepared our speech well so that wasn’t necessary after all.

After the ceremony we got a campus tour. Yuhda, Pita, Manda and Widi showed us the whole campus and every faculty that belonged to the campus. When we are at the campus, we have to wear long trousers. Which was very hot because, this day it was around 30 degrees. We also met the people who are going to help us extending our visa. They are very nice, and very helpful. During their explanation what we needed and when we had to extend our visa, they gave us something that tasted like kroepoek (I don’t know the English word for this xD). It was delicious, so that same evening we went to the mall and we tried to find it. Without any success, unfortunately.

After the campus tour we went to our hotel, to pick up our luggage. After we did this, we took a taxi to our new apartment. After we unpacked our stuff, we had to sign some sort of a contract. In the ‘contract’ stood that we are hiring the apartment for one month and the rules we had to obey. The price for this apartment is 3.000.000 Rupiah for one month; it seems like a lot of money, but in euro’s it is €180. Which is cheap compared to the price you have to pay for the same apartment in The Netherlands. After signing the contract we went to the mall, to purchase some stuff for in our apartment. Like soap, breakfast and laundry stuff. We also had diner at the pizza hut =P and after diner we needed a taxi to bring us back because we had a lot of bags and stuff. What did you expect when you go shopping with four girls =P

Today we go for a city tour, therefore we need to walk to the university. There is just one little big problem, none of us was sure which way we had to go. Except Jente, but she was sick unfortunately and stayed at her apartment.

You don’t need to guess what happened next…. We were lost in Yogyakarta and late for our city tour. Yuhda was our guide this day, so we texted him and explained our situation. He told us to stay where we are, and wait for him to pick us up. So, our first try to walk to the university already was a big failure xD Yuhda picked us up and showed us a lot of Yogya. At mariboro (a big street with only stores) we stopped to look around and of course to buy some things. In the end, I got some Batik shirts which are traditional Javanese shirts (Foto’s).

Then we went on with our tour to the sultan palace, a street with stores that only sells silver items, the traditional market and we drove past the zoo. Which, we all want to visit when we have the chance. After our city tour we took Yuhda for lunch at the garden café, just to thank him for showing us the city.

After our city tour we went to see mas Dede, and received our schedule. Our lessons start tomorrow, and we start with Bahasa Indonesia grammar and Indonesian Culture.

tuurlijk wist je niet waar je moest kijken bij de dansers maar dat had niks met de dans te maken ;)
